SHA-2 Hash

Instant SHA-224/256/384/512 digests

How to Use

SHA-2 is today's mainstream secure hash family, with four variants: SHA-224, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512. SHA-256 is the most widely used — HTTPS certificates, blockchains and salted password storage all rely on it as the default choice for signatures and checksums.

How to use: enter text, pick a variant, and the digest appears instantly with one-click copy. Computation runs locally via WebCrypto; nothing is uploaded. For password storage use dedicated algorithms like bcrypt or Argon2 rather than bare SHA.

FAQ

Should I choose SHA-256 or SHA-512?

Both are secure enough. SHA-256 is more universal with a shorter digest; SHA-512 is actually faster on 64-bit CPUs but produces a longer digest. When in doubt, SHA-256 is the default.

Can SHA-2 be used for password storage?

Bare SHA-2 is unsuitable — it's too fast, making brute force cheap. Use slow salted algorithms like bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2 for passwords; SHA-2 is for integrity checks and signatures.

Is the computation secure?

The digest is computed entirely in your browser via the WebCrypto API — no data is ever sent to a server.
